THOMAS DURM

Thomas "Pat" Patrick Durm, 70, of St. Ignace died Saturday, December 15, 2001 at Northern Michigan Hospital from injuries received in an auto accident on Thursday evening, December 6, at U.S. 2 and Cheeseman Road. Pat was born July 6, 1931 in Niles, to Thomas A. and Julia (Flood) Durm. He graduated from Berrian Springs High School in 1949, and spent two years in the infantry during the Korean War, and then retired from the Army Reserves in 1978. He married Fern G. Huyck on December 27, 1952 in St. Ignace and she died May 1, 1993. Pat was very active in community affairs, serving 12 years on the Mackinac County Board of Commissioners; was on the Mackinac Straits Hospital Board; LMAS Board; UPCAP Board; Hospice Board; Community Action Board; Work Force Consortium Chairman; active at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus; VFW and American Legion; Moose Lodge #999; 1st Vice President of St. Ignace Lions Club; former 4-H leader.

He was a rural mail carrier from 1952 to 1973 in Niles, and retired because of health, moving to St. Ignace in 1974. He was also very active in the Democratic Party.

Survived by one son, James (Annette) Durm of St. Ignace; daughters, Kathleen (Keith) Schoenleber of Niles, Debra Durm of Stevensville and Susanne (Mark Allen) Lewis of West Branch; two brothers, Charles (Barbara) Durm of Niles, Joseph (Sandy) Durm of St. Ignace; sisters, Julia (Charlie) LaSata of Niles, Mary (Tom) Mechtenberg of Niles, Marge (Don) Durm-Hiatt of Niles; special friend, Leona Grenier; sister-in-law, Delores (Cliff) Marshall of St. Ignace; brother-in-law, James (Jeri) Huyck of St. Ignace; father-in-law, Ford Huyck of St. Ignace; six grandchildren, Brent and Scott Schoenleber, David Durm, Daniel, Cody and Sarah Lewis; and one great-granddaughter, Allie. The six will serve as pallbearers.

Friends may call at Dodson Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday. Parish prayers will be at 8 p.m. with Deacon Donald Olmstead officiating. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, December 18 at 10 a.m. at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church with Fr. C. Michael Rhoades and Deacon Donald Olmstead officiating. Burial will be in Gros Cap Cemetery. A Moose memorial service will be at 7 p.m., followed by a Lions Club honoring and a Military Service by the VFW and American Legion. The VFW, American Legion and K of C will serve as Honor guard at the funeral home.
