  General Notes:

William Parr, eldest son of Sir Thomas Parr and Alice Tunstall. He was born about 1434 probably in Lancashire where the family was long established. His great grandfather married Elizabeth de Ros, granddaughter and heiress of Thomas de Ros, baron of Kendal and thus acquired Kendal Castle in jure de uxoris [in right of his wife]. His father, Sir Thomas, was sub-vice comes [literally under viscount] for Westmorland from 1428 to 1437. He was a Yorkist during the Wars of the Roses and attained in 1459. This attainder was probably reversed in 1461 and he died in 1464.

William was made a knight of the Garter by Edward IV. After Edward's exile he rewarded William with the comptrollership of his household which he held until Edward's death. He was knight of the shire (another term for Member of Parliament) for Westmorland in 1467 and 1473, sheriff of Cumberland from 1473 to 1483.

William married (1) Joan Trusbutt, widow of Thomas Colt of Roydon, Essex. She died about 1473 and he married (2) Elizabeth FitzHugh, daughter of Henry. There were one daughter, Anne, and three sons from this second marriage: Thomas, son and heir; William, and John.

William probably died about the time of the Edward IV's funeral. History of Parliament says: "He was also put on the subsidy commission 1 Aug. 1483. He was dead in Feb. 1484, and it is evident from his commissions and his shrievalty of Westmorland that he died Aug./Nov. 1483."
