  General Notes:

Biography
Joan Fortescue was born about 1405 in Shepham (aka Sheepham) manor, Modbury Parish, Devonshire, England. She was a daughter and oldest child of (Sir) John Fortescue, b. ca. 1386, the second son of Sir William Fortescue, and John's wife, Eleanor de Norreys (aka Norries), b: 1382 in Norries, North Huish, Devon. Joan's father, as a second son, made his fortune in armed service to King Henry V (1413-1422) fighting in France and rising to be named Governor of Meaux, in 1422 after its capture by the English.

The Fortescue family were a junior branch of an old Anglo-Norman family that traced its lineage back to Sir Richard le Fort, b. ca. 1025 in St. Evremont sur l'Ozanne, Normandy, France; and who accompanied William the Conqueror to England in 1066. They were established as landed gentry in Modbury, Devonshire, as early as 1140 when Ralph Fortescue donated some land to Modbury Priory at about the time of its foundation. Their primary seat was Whympstone (Whympston) Manor in Modbury Parish, where Joan's grandfather and uncle lived.

Joan Fortescue was married to wealthy land-owner, Sir John Bozom of Bosoms Hele (Bozom-Zeal), Devon, at around 15 years old in 1420. He was nearly 30 years old. Their only child, Jenet (Janet) Elizabeth Bozom, was born late that same year or in early 1421. There may have been complications from this birth because many genealogies state that Joan Fortescue died at Bozom-Zeal, Devon, in 1422.

Joan married John BOZUM [6746] [MRIN: 5461], son of Edmund BOZUM [6750] and Mabel FALEWELL [6751], in 1420 in Bosom-Zeal, South Tawton, Devon, England.1584 (John BOZUM [6746] was born in 1390 in Dittisham, Devon, England 1134 and died on 8 August 1440 in Dittisham, Devon, England 1134.)
