Leon Joseph Benoit, of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, died Sunday, August 15, 2004 at War Memorial Hospital. He was born March 29, 1914 in Perronville, and was a member of St. Mary's ProCathedral Church and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. Leon retired from the Carbide. He enjoyed golfing, baking and cooking, and delighted in his family.
Leon is survived by his wife Rose (Andary) Benoit of Sault Ste. Marie, whom he married on May 28, 1942 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sault Ste. Marie. Also surviving are two sons, Richard (Josie) Benoit and James J. (Donna) Benoit, both of Sault Ste. Marie; four daughters, Nancy (Gordon Moon) Thompson of Pickford; Elaine M. (Tim) Colna of Columbus, Ohio; Sharon (Mark) Sauve of Riverview; Marilyn (Joseph) Killips of Taylor; two sisters, Betty Wonnacott of Sault Ste. Marie; and Joyce Ann (Oscar "Barney") Barnes of Sault Ste. Marie; one brother, Howard (Pat) Benoit of Sault Ste. Marie; 13 grandchildren, Joan (John) Jorgenson; Karen (Jim) Stenzel; Anne Marie Sauve; Carrie (Joe) Le Master; James L. Benoit; Gary J. Benoit; Jared M. Benoit; Eric, Carl, and Lori Colna, and Joe, Chris, and Janet Thompson; five great-grandchildren, John and Jillian Jorgenson, Joseph and Jesse Le Master; and James Benoit; and sister-in-law Anne Doran of Sault Ste. Marie.
He is predeceased by a son, Gary Benoit in 1977; parents, Gideon and Phoebe (Morin) Benoit; sisters Elizabeth, Delores, and Antoinette Benoit, and Katherine Paquette; and brothers, Clifford, Bill, Clayton and Austin Benoit.
Visitation will be held Friday, August 20, 7-9 p.m., at Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home in Sault Ste. Marie, with prayers at 8 p.m. Funeral services are set for Saturday, August 21, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, with Father Pawel Mecwel and Deacon Bill Piche officiating. His final resting place will be at Riverside Cemetery.
Arrangements are being handled by Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home in the Sault.
