  General Notes:

Emerson Hammond was born March 25, 1905 at the family homestead in Hamilton Twp, Gratiot County, Mi. He was the eleventh out of fourteen children born to Frank and Luvina (Fuller) Hammond. His father was 59 years old and his mother was 32 when he was born. On August 20th, 1927, 21 year old Emerson married 16 year old Ellen Jane Hoy in Saginaw Michigan. At the time of their marriage Emerson was working in a factory. On the 1930 census, Emerson and Ellen were living on Hill St in Saginaw next to Ellen's sister Evaleen (Hoy) Barnhart and her mother Minnie (Shephard) Hoy with their first child Richard, born October 11th, 1928.

Sometime after September 2, 1936, Ellen had begun going to help Emerson's brother Cecil care for his children. Cecil's wife, Jennie Vanetti, died in childbirth on September 2, 1936.

In September of 1937 Ellen petitioned Clinton County Probate court to have Emerson committed to Traverse City State Hospital on the grounds he was mentally diseased. At this time they had a total of five children, four living. Richard 9, Jackie (died as an infant), Gerald 3, Jane 2 and Donald 1 month. The family were residents of Duplain Twp in Clinton County, Mi. In the petition, Ellen stated that Emerson was threatening to harm her and their minor children. Emerson was evaluated by doctors who at that time said they found no evidence of insanity and therefore Ellen's petition was denied.

In 1938 Ellen filed for divorce in Clinton County. She also became pregnant with Cecil's child in late Feb or Early March of 1938. This baby, named Barbara Ellen, was born November 21, 1938 and died November 24, 1938. Emerson and Ellen's divorce was final on December 21, 1938. The divorce judgement stated that Ellen was to get custody of Jane and Donald and Emerson was to get custody of Richard and Gerald. Ellen married Cecil on January 7th, 1939.

In August of 1942, Cecil petitioned Clinton County Court to have Emerson committed to Traverse City State Hospital as an alcoholic. This time, after being examined by doctors his commitment was ordered. 37 year old Emerson was admitted into the Traverse City State Hospital on Aug 27, 1942 as an alcoholic. At admission, Emerson was reported as 5'7" tall and weighing 136 1/2 llbs. He had brown hair, blue eyes and a dark complexion. Emerson would be in and out of this hospital the remainder of his life and died there at age 65 on March 21, 1970 from a heart attack. He is buried in Ford Cemetery in Elsie, MI next to his parents. He has no marker on his grave.
