General Notes:
Biography Thomas Carey of Chilton Foliat, Wiltshire was the son of Sir William Cary of Cockington, Devon, an eminent Lancastrian. and his second wife Alice Fulford This puts his birth date at about 1458, as his half-brother Robert was born no later that 1457.
It is likely that he spent most of his childhood in the company of his mother's people. His father, his maternal grandfather, and the uncle for whom he was named had all met their end under the blade for their support of the House of Lancaster.
In 1492, he was sued in the Court of Common Pleas by his half-brother Robert who wanted to recover some of their father William's properties; namely the manor of Cary. As a result of this Thomas left Devon and went to Chilton Foliat in Wiltshire, where he lived the remainder of his life on lands that had come to him through his mother's family.
He married Margaret Spencer, daughter of Sir Robert Spencer and Eleanor Beaufort and sister of Katherine Spencer, Countess of Northumberland.
In 1505, a contemporary pedigree gives their children as Anne, Edward, John and Elianor; later pedigrees add younger children Mary, Margaret, Anne and William.
