General Notes:
John de Tunstall who was engaged in various pleas in 1295 and later. He served in the Scottish War in the retinue of John de Buteturte and died about the year 1315 leaving a son William and a widow Gundreda who remarried Roger son of Matthew de Burgh.
John de Tunstall's capital messuage was in Cantsfield, according to a pleading of 1292; Assize R. 408, m. 27 d.
________________________________________ "John de Tunstall, Lord of Tunstall, claimed lands in Tunstall, of which Elias de Tunstall his brother, whose heir he was, was seised on the day of his departure on his pilgrimage to the Holy Land, and who died on his march towards Jerusalem s.p., against William fil William de Tunstall, 20 Edw I. Defendant in a plea, at the suit of Margaret who was the wife of Galfred de Neville, toughing the grinding of corn at her mill in Wraton, 21 Edw. I. Defendant in a plea of land 29 Edw I. Defendant, with Gundreda his wife, at the suit of Mathew de Redman, in a plea of warranty of two acres and three and a quarter roods of land in Tunstall-juxta-Hornby, co. Lancaster, which Thomas fil John de Tunstall claims as his right against him, 3 Edw II." ____________________________________ In 1289 he was insufficiently qualified to serve as coroner in Lancashire. "To the sheriff of Lancaster. Order to cause ^ coroner for that county to be elected in place of John de Tunstall, lately elected, who is insufficiently qualified."
