General Notes:
Biography Margaret is the daughter of Sir Philip Courtenay, of Powderham, Devon, the fifth son of Hugh Courtenay, 2nd Earl of Devon and his wife Margaret de Bohun. Her mother is presumably Sir Philip Courtenay's wife, Anne Wake.
Her birth date is unknown, but it must have been before 28 January 1391, when she is named in the will of her paternal grandmother, 'Margaret de Courtney, Countess of Devon', who granted her 100 marks to increase her portion.
Marriage Margaret Courtenay married probably before 1402, and definitely before her father's death in 1406, Robert Cary, of Cockington, Devon, son of Sir John Cary, and Margaret Holway, as his first wife.
They had two children: 1.) Philip Cary;
2.) Joanna (Johanna) Cary, married William Ashford, of Ashford.
Some sources name the mother of these two children as Robert Cary's second wife, Joan or Jane Hankford but Philip at least would appear to be the son of Margaret Courtenay.
Death The date she died is also unknown, but it was probably about 1413 and definitely before October 1413.
Margaret married Sir Robert CARY Knight of Cockington [4101] [MRIN: 5503], son of Sir John CARY II, Knight [4158] and Margaret HOLWAY [4576], before 1402.1127 (Sir Robert CARY Knight of Cockington [4101] was born in 1377 in Cockington, , Devonshire, England 1128 and died in 1435 in Clovelly, , Devonshire, England 1128,1129.)
