Sault Ste. Marie-Chippewa County Sheriff's deputies were called to the power canal Tuesday morning to recover the body of an apparent suicide victim. The agency was notified by employees at the Edison Sault Power plant.
Police reports indicate two motorists noticed someone standing on the opposite side of the Ashmun Street railing at approximately 3 a.m. Tuesday and called the Sheriff's dept. Deputies responding to the call searched the area but were unsuccessful in locating anyone at the site.
Dead is Erma Mae Nelson, 71 of Sault Ste. Marie . She is survived by her husband William, two sons Ricky of Golden, Colo, and Mark of Rudyard; a daughter Diane McDonald of Sault Ste. Marie; two brothers Ervin Gray of Pickford and Earl Gray of Holt; a sister Cora Oulette of Sault Ste. Marie, and 5 grandchildren.
Calling hours will be from 10 am until 1 pm Friday at the Hovie Funeral Home with services to follow at 1 pm, with Rev. Robert B. Patrick officiating.
Burial will be in Oaklawn Chapel Gardens. Memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church.
