Summit county was formed in 1840 from parts of Portage, Medina, and Stark Counties. The townships taken from Portage were Twinsburg, Northfield, Stow, Boston, Hudson, Springfield, Northampton, Tallmadge, Portage, and Coventry. The townships taken from Medina were Richfield, Copley, Norton, and Bath. The townships taken from Stark were Franklin and Green.
Cuyahoga Falls was formed in 1851 from parts of Tallmadge, Stow, Portage, and Northampton. Middlebury Township was formed in 1857 from parts of Tallmadge, Springfield, Coventry and Portage. It was included in Akron in 1888.
Akron was formed in 1825 and was made County seat temporarily in 1840 and permanently in 1842.
