  General Notes:

SIR PHILIP CARY KNIGHT was born about 1406 of Cockington, Manor, Devonshire, England, to Robert de Cary (1377-1437) and Margaret Courtenay (1383-1413.) He married Lady Christiasn Orchard about 1436, Holway, Devon, England.

Philip Cary died 23 September 1437, Bristol, Somerset, England, age 37.

Little is known about the life of Philip Cary in comparison to some of the other members of his notable family. He was born circa 1400[1] to Sir Robert Cary and one of the daughters of Sir Phillip Courtenay of Powderham, Devon; most probably Margaret although some sources say Elizabeth. He was the eldest son of Robert, as his Inquisition Post Mortem described him as son and heir. [2]
Philip came into possession of the Manor of Cockington, Devon on the death of his father Robert. [3] He assigned about one third of it to Robert's widow Joan, with a reversion back to him at her death.
Cary was a Knight of the shire of Devon in the Parliament of 1433. He was noted as a supporter of the Duke of Bedford who had approved the sentence by which Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in Rouen in 1431. [4] On 1 May 1434 he acted with Bishop Lacy and Sir Roger Champernown to receive the oaths of six knights and 68 others for the keeping of the peace in Devon. [5]

Philip died on 23 Dec 1437 only 5 weeks after the birth of his son Wiiliam, leaving his wife Christian a widow with a small baby. [6] His Inquisition Post Mortem was held at Exeter, Devon on 4 Oct 1437 and mentioned both his widow Christian and his son William.

Cockington Mannor
markjane8060 originally shared this 18 Jul 2013. The first official documentation of the village was in the 10th century. The manor was owned by Alric the Saxon, before William Hostiarus, William de Falesia and Robert FitzMartin, who passed it down to his son Roger, who renounced his name to become Roger de Cockington. The Cockington family owned Cockington Estate from 1048\endash 1348. The Cary family owned the court from 1375 to 1654. It was then sold to the Mallock family.

Sir Philip Cary (c 1579 \endash 1631) was an English landowner and politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1614 and 1625.
Cary was the son of Edward Cary of Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire. He matriculated at Queen's College, Oxford on 22 February 1594, aged 14. He was a student of Gray's Inn in 1590. He was knighted on 23 May 1605, In 1614, he was elected Member of Parliament for Woodstock. He was re-elected MP for Woodstock in 1621 1624 and 1625.[1]
Cary held estates at Caddington, Bedfordshire and Hunslet, Yorkshire. He died at the age of about 52 and was buried at Aldenham on 13 June 1631.[1]

Christian Orchard was born in about 1406, the daughter of William Orchard. [1] Her brother's Inquisition Post Mortem describes her as being aged 13 on 30 Nov 1419; making her birth date about 1406. She was apparently born at Ladford, Devon and baptised in the church of St Michael at nearby Shebbear.[2]According to one testimony, there was a heavy storm of wind the day of her baptism and many houses in the village suffered damage. Elizabeth Lylbere, the wife of one Thomas Lylbere, was asked to be wet nurse to the baby Christian.[3]
Her father died in Dec 1419 and then her only brother Richard (aged 8) soon after in June of 1420, which made her the sole heiress of the family's estates.
In 1422, at the age of about 16, Christian married Philip Cary. Records of an Inquisition held at Shebbear, Devon on 19 Dec 1422 show that her age needed to be proven in order to assess the right of her husband to enter upon her inheritance. [4]
Christian and Philip had two children; a daughter named Christian and then a son William. Philip died only 5 weeks after William's birth. Philip's Inquisition Post Mortem referred both to his wife Christin (Christian) and his son William. [5]
After the death of her first husband Phillip Cary, Christian married Walter Portman. [6] In documents relating to her son Robert Cary he is described as Robert Cary, esquire, son and heir to William Cary, knight, son and heir to Christian Portman. [7] Christian and Walter had at least one son, John, who was probably in the legal profession as he was buried in the Middle Temple Church. [8]
Christian was widowed a second time between 1453 and 1456 when her husband Walter died.[9] She died in 1472, very wealthy in her own right, leaving her many properties to heirs Robert Cary, her grandson, and John Portman, the son of her second marriage.
