On the record of Reuben's marriage to Melinda Pennington his parents are listed as William Hunter and Hannah Fountain. William died in 1884 and Reuben wasn't born until 1890. Reuben was probably born to a relative of William and was raised by William's wife, Hannah.

At the time of the 1920 Census, Reuben was living in Rudyard, on Section Street. He was 30 years old and working as a mechanic.

Sometime before the beginning of the depression in 1929 Reuben and Melinda moved south to Plymouth, Michigan.
