ALDANA, daughter of ---. "Willelmus... comes" names "genitore meo Theuderico et genitrice mea Aldana" in his letter dated December 14, 804 (version two: dated December 15, 804) for the foundation of the monastery of Gellone[415]. Settipani cites an Aquitaine necrology that lists "Willelmus... pater eius Theodericus, mater Aldana soror Hiltrudis et Landradæ"[416]. It suggests that "Hiltrude" was the wife of Odilo Duke of Bavaria, and therefore that the wife of Theoderic was Aldana, daughter of Charles "Martel" maiordomus of Austrasia and Neustria [Carolingia]. The theory is attractive but inconclusive, since its validity depends on the fact that there is no other contemporary Hiltrudis, which is not provable. Hlawitschka highlights the case against affiliation[417]. However, evidence from the letter of 25 May 765, quoted in the document NOBILITY MEROVINGIA under Aldana's supposed sister Landrada, suggests that Settipani's hypothesis may be correct. In addition, Einhard indicates that Theoderic [I] was related to Charles I King of the Franks when he records that in 782 King Charles sent his three missi "Adalgiso camerario et Geilone comite stabuli et Worado comite palati" to meet "in... Saxony... Theodericus comes, propinquus regis"[418]. A possible relationship between the king and Theoderic [I] would have been through his wife, if she had been the king's paternal aunt.

Most historians identify Hiltrude, Alda's sister, with Hiltrude, wife of Duke Odilon of Bavaria and daughter of Charles Martel and Rotrude, and consider Alda and Landrada to be daughters of the latter. From an onomastic point of view, Landrada can be compared to Landrada, mother of Saint Chrodegang and close relative of Rotrude.

However, the German historian Eduard Hlawitschka refuted this genealogical construction in 1965 by presenting the following arguments:

of the three sisters, only Hiltrude is mentioned as the daughter of Charles Martel by a contemporary source, with Landrada being cited only by a late life of Saint Chrodegang, who mentions her as the saint's mother and charles' daughter, which is chronologically possible.
A grandson of Charles Martel, Duke Wala, marries a granddaughter of Alda, and is surprised that religious authorities did not oppose marriage by consanguinity.
He is surprised that the obituary does not mention that Alda was the sister of Pepin the Short.
Finally, he explained that the reference to "royal blood" is explained by the fact that Thierry I st of Autun, descendant of Bertrada of Prüm, is Merovingian and relative of Bertrada of Laon, girl Bertrada of Prüm and mother of Charlemagne.
Several followed, their demonstration does not seem to be really conclusive, then it was rejected by the Community of Historians:

The mention of the erroneous passage that presents Landrada as mother of Saint Chrodegang and daughter of Charles Martel surely comes from a confusion between Landrada, mother of Saint Chrodegang, and another Landrada, daughter of Charles Martel, who militates in favor of the existence of a daughter of Saint Chrodegang. Charles Martel of that name.
In the time of the Carolingians, marriage was not yet a religious sacrament, but only a civil act, and numerous examples show that the impediments by consanguinity were not yet respected.
There are other examples of letters that present close relatives of Carolingian kings and for which kinship with kings is not mentioned. On the other hand, Hiltrude was then on bad terms with Pepin the Short and Carloman, and her sisters may have shared this opposition.
Finally, "of royal lineage" means to come from a royal family (Merovingian or Carolingian), which excludes the kinship of Bertrade of Prüm, and should not then (under the reign of Louis the Pious) be unfashionable. the ancient dynasty.
Therefore, these arguments reinforce Alda's lineage.
