  General Notes:

Sir William Keith, 12th Marischal of Scotland, was the son of Sir Edward Keith, 11th Marischal of Scotland, and his 1st wife, Isabella de Synton, daughter of Alexander de Synton. William was born between 1305 and 1315 at Dunottar Castle, the treaditional seat of Clan Keith and the Marischal's of Scotland in Kincardineshire, Scotland. He was the oldest of Edward and Isabella's three children, his younger siblings were John Keith (married Mariota de Cheyne) and Catherine Keith (married Alexander Barclay). After the death of his mother, William's father remarried to Christian Menteith, giving William a 1/2 sister Janet Keith (who Sir David Barclay of Brechin and Sir Thomas Erskine of Erskine).
In 1333 during the Second War of Scottish Independence, William fought in the Battle of Halidon Hill, under Sir Archibald Douglas, Regent and Guardian of Scotland, and was taken prisoner. Scottish losses that day were devastating up to 23,000 casualties, William was very lucky to have survived the battle, Sir Archibald Douglas and many other nobles did not. Most of the leaders of Scotland died that day. It is not recorded what happened to those captured, most likely they were ransomed back to their families.
Between 1347 and 1350 William married Margaret Fraser of Touchfraser, the only child of John Fraser. Margaret was a wealthy heiress, and cousin of the Bruce and Stuart kings (Robert the Bruce was her great-uncle), she brought to William the demesnes of Touchfraser and the Barony of Cowie. In a charter dated 2 May 1351 Margaret is identified as his wife. Together William and Margaret had 8 children:
- John Keith (died 18 March 1374)
- Robert Keith
- Alexander Keith of Grandown (-after 2 Jun 1413)
- Muriella Keith (-before 1 Jun 1449). m. ROBERT Stewart Earl of Fife
- Janet Keith, m. Philip de Arbuthnott
- Margaret Keith (-after 1397) m. James Lindsay of Crawford
- Elizabeth Keith (-1436) married 3x: Adam Gordon of Huntly, Nicholas Erskine of Kinnoull, Thomas Somerville of Carnwath
- Christian Keith, m John Hay of Tullibody and William Lindsay of the Byres

Edward Keith died in 1351 and William succeeded his father as Marischal of Scotland and Head of Clan Keith.

The Marischal of Scotland (or Marascallus Scotie or Marscallus Scotiae) was a hereditary office held by the senior member and Chief of Clan Keith. The Marischal's duty was to serve as custodian of the Royal Regalia of Scotland, and to protect the king's person when attending parliament.

William was the Sheriff of Kincardine, also known as The Mearns, from 1359 to 1391.
William's oldest son John died in 1374, and his wife Margaret in 1410. When William died he was succeeded by his 2nd son Robert Keith. William's death is recorded by some records as occurring in May/October 1407, in others as late as 1413.
